Based on the RACI matrix, the business sponsor must approve the change before it is implemented. The RACI matrix is a tool that defines the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders for each task or deliverable in the project. The RACI matrix uses four categories to describe the level of involvement of each stakeholder:
Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed. The business sponsor is the person who provides the funding and support for the project, and who has the authority to approve or reject changes that affect the project scope, schedule, budget, or quality. The business sponsor is usually accountable for the project outcomes and benefits, and therefore must approve any changes that may impact them. The business sponsor is different from the subject matter expert, who is the person who has the knowledge or expertise in a specific domain or area related to the project; the project manager, who is the person who leads the project team and manages the project scope, schedule, budget, and risks; and the system architect, who is the person who designs the technical architecture and components of the solution.
