I would stick with B.
I wouldn't allow users input when self registering to determine their profiles.
There is no indication that different access levels need to be granted.
Community experience can be easily managed with audiences based on contact/user attributes. The tricky part might is that there is no indication that new fields need to be mapped/captured on self registration
