Case study
Overview
Fabrikam, Inc., is an international surfboard manufacturing company that has 5,000 employees.
The company has a main office and ten branch offices. The main office is located in Los Angeles. The branch offices are located in various countries.
All offices connect to each other by using a WAN link. Each office connects directly to the Internet.
Existing Environment
Active Directory
The company has an Active Directory forest named fabrikam.com. The forest contains a single domain.
The main office has three domain controllers. Each branch office has one domain controller. All domain controllers are installed on physical servers that run Windows Server 2008 R2.
An Active Directory site exists for each office.
Network Infrastructure
In the main office, the company has a Hyper-V deployment that contains five Hyper-V hosts. The Hyper-V hosts host 30 virtual machines.
Five of the virtual machines are configured as shown in the following table.

All servers currently run Windows Server 2008 R2.
The company does not use clustering services or load balancing services.
Problem Statements
The company identifies the following network issues:
Server outages adversely affect daily business activities.

Access to the data stored on FS1 can be erratic for users in the branch offices during peak business

hours.
Requirements
Business Goals
The company identifies the following business goals:
Work more closely with a business partner named Litware Inc., to enable a more effective distribution

of surfboards and to reduce costs.
Implement an internal service level agreement (SLA) for Hyper-V host uptime.

Minimize hardware and software costs whenever possible

Provide a highly available server environment.

Planned Changes
The company plans to implement the following changes:
Implement a new Storage Area Network (SAN) before any new servers are deployed. The SAN will be

used to store virtual machine files.
Migrate all of the virtual machines to new hosts that run Windows Server 2012.

Migrate AD RMS to a new server that runs Windows Server 2012.

Migrate AD CS to a new server that runs Windows Server 2012.

Deploy Microsoft System Center 2012 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Deploy a new internal web-based application named App1.
Monitoring Requirements
The company identifies the following monitoring requirements:
A monitoring solution must be implemented to monitor the Hyper-V host uptime.

Server monitoring must measure unplanned downtime.

Technical Requirements
The company identifies the following technical requirements for the planned changes:
Fabrikam users must be allowed to authenticate to the web-based applications of Litware by using

single sign-on with their fabrikam.com user account.
Distributed File System (DFS) namespaces and DFS data must be available if the WAN links between

the branch offices and the main office fail.
Group Policy must be used to enroll all laptop computers automatically for a computer certificate for

WPA-2 Enterprise WiFi configuration.
The new Hyper-V hosts must be provisioned and managed by using Microsoft System Center 2012

Virtual Machine Manager (VMM).
All of the virtual machines must be available if a Hyper-V host fails. Remediation must be automated.

Disruptions to services on the network during the migration of AD RMS and AD CS must be minimized.

App1 must be deployed to several new virtual machines that have Internet Information Services (IIS)

installed.
The company's developers must add App1 to IIS by using Microsoft Visual Studio.

Domain controllers must be protected against hardware failure and data corruption.

Server backups must be centralized by using System Center 2012.

Downtime of services must be minimized at all items.

All new servers must run Windows Server 2012.

Administrative effort must be minimized.
